Water Mist Systems
The water mist system is a relatively new fire engineering engineering solution to for fires within buildings . These types of systems were initially developed for use in marine and aircraft applications where weight and space are critical and subsequently have developed to enable protection for a wide range of applications such as
· Data centres,
· Hotels
· Offices
· Banks
· Care centres
· Hospitals
· Schools
· Archiving premises
In addition water mist suppression systems are proven to be highly effective for a wide range of local applications including;
· Deep fat fryers, industrial ovens and ducts in the food processing industry
· Turbine enclosures
· Car stackers
· Generators
· Switch rooms
· Transformers
· Paint spray booths
· Hydraulic pits
Automatics’ water mist systems are 100% environmentally friendly and are harmless to users and water mist systems are sometimes more effective than conventional gas or water based fire fighting equipment / systems.
For many users the small amount of water used in high pressure water mist systems and reduced consequential damage helps to attract lower insurance premiums. Installing water mist can be a good investment in several ways
Water Mist Technology. Brief Overview
For a fire to survive, it relies on the presence of the three elements of the fire triangle being, oxygen, heat and combustible material. The removal of any one element can suppress or extinguish a fire. High pressure water mist goes further, It removes two elements of the triangle; heat and oxygen.
The mist is created by discharging water through specially designed nozzles at very high pressure. The mist acts similar to gaseous fire protection systems, in that the mist can extinguish fires in shielded and obstructed locations which would not be reached by other directional water jets / droplets type systems.
The larger the surface area, the more effective the system becomes in rapidly reducing temperature and oxygen at the flame front. Dependant on application a minimum of just 1 litre of water per minute flows through a nozzle with the system also binding smoke particles reducing smoke damage. This makes water mist an extremely effective fire protection medium that significantly reduces asset damage and operational down time in all business critical applications.
Water mist systems depend on water supplied from either a dedicated pump system (for larger spaces) or alternatively duel pressurized nitrogen and non pressurized water filled cylinder system banks (for more local application).
